Dawud Anyabwile is an Emmy Award winning animation director, illustrator, and co creator of the independent comic series Brotherman: Dictator of Discipline. Based in Atlanta, Georgia, he has built a multi decade career spanning comics, television, film, and fine art.
Originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dawud began his creative journey alongside his brothers, exploring storytelling through illustration, stop motion animation, and filmmaking. This early foundation led to the creation of Brotherman, a pioneering independent comic series that helped shape the modern Black independent comics movement and remains influential decades later.
Over the course of his career, Dawud has worked across major studios and productions in New York, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. His credits include work on television series such as Rugrats, The Wild Thornberrys, and Daria, as well as feature films including Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul and Love, Simon. As an animation director, he has contributed to high profile projects for major networks and streaming platforms.
In addition to his work in animation, Dawud has illustrated numerous books and graphic novels, including the adaptation of Walter Dean Myers’ Monster for HarperCollins. He is also the creator of Brotherman: Revelation, expanding the original series into a new generation of storytelling.
A two time Glyph Comics Award winner and Eisner Award nominee, Dawud has received numerous honors for his contributions to the arts, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention and the Key to Kansas City for Outstanding Service to Children. His original Brotherman artwork is part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
Dawud is the founder of Big City Entertainment and continues to develop original intellectual property while expanding his work into fine art and visual storytelling across multiple mediums.
