Born and raised in Minneapolis, Garret started creating short films during college and later attended the American Film Institute, where the short he co-wrote and produced, HELICOPTER, won numerous festival awards.
After receiving a $35,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, he wrote, produced, and directed the short film SPARK, which premiered at Sundance. The film also screened at New Directors/New Film at the MOMA and won several festival honors, including the Grand Prize at the USA Film Festival. It eventually aired on Showtime as the winner of their Black Filmmakers Showcase. This award included a grant to produce another short, leading Garret to write, produce, and direct BB GUN, which aired on Showtime during Black History Month.
His feature film SPARK, starring Terrence Howard, Nicole Ari Parker, and Brendan Sexton III, was developed through the Sundance Filmmakers Lab. After completion, it premiered at Sundance and screened at the Berlin Film Festival (Berlinale) and numerous other international festivals. Garret received the Best Director Award at the Urbanworld Film Festival for this work.
Several film organizations have supported Garret’s screenplays. HYENAS was selected for the Sundance Screenwriters Lab. MUDPUPPY participated in the Film Independent Screenwriters Lab, was chosen for Tribeca All Access, and was optioned by Sly Dog Films. His screenplay LOST DOG was selected for both the Film Independent Screenwriters and Directors Labs, featured in the Fast Track program at the Los Angeles Film Festival, nominated for Best Screenplay and the Gordon Parks Award at the IFP Film Market in NYC, and included in the WGA’s Feature Writer Access Project.
He wrote, produced, and directed the short THE RISE for ITVS's Futurestates science fiction series. The film premiered at SXSW before its online release.
Garret is currently developing his next feature, A LITTLE LOST, a dramatic thriller.
From an early age, Garret developed a deep interest in photography. His passion endures through an extensive, ongoing street photography project focused on his adopted hometown, Los Angeles.
