Joyce Liu-Countryman is an American producer and actress whose work spans feature films, music videos, and shorts showcased nationally and internationally. As an actress, she has earned awards and nominations for her performances on stage, in film, television, and commercials.
Born and raised in San Francisco, California, to an engineer father and a real estate agent mother, Joyce chose a different path from her family by declining admission to UC Berkeley—her father and brother’s alma mater—and instead attended UCLA. She graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and anthropology.
At UCLA, she discovered a passion for the performing arts through an introductory acting class in the School of Theater. She performed with the Asian American-themed HereAndNow sketch ensemble and made her stage debut with a one-line role in the UCLA-East West Players’ joint production, "12-1-A." Joyce pursued graduate studies in clinical psychology, aiming to fulfill her family’s expectations of earning a doctorate. She earned a Master of Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and completed three years of doctoral studies at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. Though she chose not to finish her Ph.D., she met her husband there through a serendipitous introduction by her academic mentor.
Deciding clinical psychology was not her true calling, Joyce left UH to work in human resources while reigniting her passion for acting. While studying at the Joanne Baron/D.W. Brown Studio, she accompanied a classmate to an open casting call for "I Wanna Be a Soap Star." Out of thousands of hopefuls, she was selected as one of the 10 cast members for Season 4.
Following the birth of her son, Joyce shifted focus to behind-the-camera work, producing her first feature film, "Eat With Me," alongside longtime friend and producing partner David Au from UW. The film premiered at the 2014 Los Angeles Film Festival, screened at festivals worldwide, won multiple awards, and secured domestic and international distribution. In 2016, she enhanced her producing expertise at the American Film Institute Conservatory, earning an MFA in producing in 2018.
Joyce continues to produce narrative films while occasionally acting. Prior to film school, she starred as "Xi Yan" in a San Francisco regional production of David Henry Hwang’s "Chinglish," earning a Best Actress nomination from the Theater Bay Area Awards.
Dedicated to creating content that broadens the representation of diverse characters and stories, Joyce believes media serves as a powerful catalyst for positive social change.
