Sasha Sokol was born on June 17, 1970, at the American British Cowdray Medical Center in Mexico City. She is the daughter of Miguel Sokol and Magdalena Cuillery. Her parents divorced when she was a toddler, and her mother later married Fernando Diez-Barroso, a significant stockholder in the Mexican multimedia conglomerate Televisa. Sasha attended Peterson College in Mexico City, a prestigious private school accredited both in Mexico and the United States.
When she released her debut album in November 1987, Sasha became the leading female pop artist of the 1980s in Mexico and many Latin American countries, maintaining that status into the early 1990s. She starred in popular Mexican soap operas such as Alcanzar Una Estrella II (1991), El Premio Mayor (1995), La Vida En El Espejo (1999), and the series Tres Generaciones (1989). Early in her career, she attended Televisa's talent school (CEA) and was selected to join the pop group Timbiriche.
Timbiriche debuted in 1982 as a children's pop group and grew into the biggest teen pop group of the 1980s in Mexico and much of Latin America, maintaining popularity for over 11 years. The group reunited in 1999 for a concert tour across Mexico, Latin America, and the United States, releasing a live double album titled El Concierto, which included three new songs.
Sasha has been linked romantically to several well-known Mexican singers and actors, including Benny Ibarra, Luis Miguel, Eduardo Palomo, and Ricky Martin. Despite her talent and beauty, her lifestyle and upbringing led to difficult experiences early in life. Her most controversial relationship was as a teenager, when she dated Timbiriche's creative producer, Luis De Llano Macedo, who was 25 years her senior. Their relationship flourished shortly after she left Timbiriche in 1986 but ended due to family pressure.
Unfortunately, Sasha later struggled with bulimia, anorexia, and cocaine addiction, driven by her desire to be thin. However, she overcame these challenges and has been clean since 1993. Today, Sasha remains a highly respected actress and singer in Mexico. She has dropped the "Diez-Barroso" surname and uses her birth name, Sokol. She leads a natural lifestyle, practicing yoga, meditation, and vegetarianism. Her fans eagerly await new work from her as an artist.
Timbiriche alumni include notable Mexican vocalists like Thalia, now married to Tommy Mottola, and Paulina Rubio. In 2005, Sasha participated in Big Brother VIP, a celebrity edition of the Mexican reality show Big Brother, where she emerged as the winner, taking home a prize of 3.5 million Mexican pesos. Capitalizing on this renewed connection with her fans, Sasha planned to release a new pop album in spring 2006. It seems she is poised to reclaim her place in the Mexican spotlight once again.
