Kendre Berry was born on March 14, 1991, in Flint, Michigan, to Ken and Telishia Berry. His passion for performing came from his mother, a theater actress, and his father, who also acted and did stand-up comedy.
He began playing drums at age two and, at three, was named "Cover Boy USA" in the America's Cover Miss/Cover Boy Pageant, where he also won the "Overall Winner" award.
At seven, Kendre’s mother saw a call on the Oprah Winfrey Show for kids to participate in an episode featuring Bill Cosby promoting his "Little Bill" books. She submitted a video of Kendre performing a Jell-o pudding act with his puppet, Jamal. His video was chosen and aired on the show.
Kendre continued acting in church, school plays, the Flint Youth Theater, and Gospel musical productions his parents produced. Excited to try out for Nickelodeon's search for the funniest kid in America, he sent in a video. His parents supported the idea, recalling his success with Oprah’s contest.
Out of 10,000 contestants, Kendre became one of the top five finalists and appeared with the cast of All That on Nickelodeon's special, "R U All That." Afterwards, he guest-starred on the show "All That."
Seeing Kendre's dedication to acting, his parents decided to move the family, including their dog Bailey, to California. Within weeks, Kendre landed the role of Backpack Boy on Nickelodeon's "Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide." He soon filmed his first movie, "Searching for David's Heart," and secured guest appearances on "Cold Case" (CBS), "One on One" (UPN), "ER" (NBC), and "Eyes" (ABC). Kendre currently portrays Durrell Young on HBO’s Emmy-winning drama "Six Feet Under," which airs Sundays at 9 pm.
