Born in Winchester in 1947, Brian Froud graduated with Honours in Graphic Design from Maidstone College of Art in 1971. Shortly after, he began working in London on various projects, including book jackets, magazine covers, advertising, and illustrating several children's books.
A few years later, Froud relocated to Devon, where he lived with fellow artist Alan Lee and Lee's family. He continued illustrating children's books while also creating and publishing his own artwork, featured in collections such as The Land of Froud and Once Upon a Time.
In 1978, Brian Froud and Alan Lee collaborated on a collection of drawings and paintings that captivated the world. Their book, Faeries, became a major success, reaching number four on the New York Times Best Seller List. Froud's artistic style and deep knowledge of folklore attracted the attention of Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets. That same year, Henson hired Froud to help design the unique world of The Dark Crystal. Released in 1982, the film was a monumental collaboration of ideas, techniques, and creativity. On the set of The Dark Crystal, Froud met Wendy Midener, a puppet designer known for creating the Gelflings and Star Wars' Yoda. Their son, Toby, starred in Henson’s 1986 film Labyrinth, for which Brian Froud served as Conceptual Designer. He continued collaborating with Henson on television projects like Jim Henson's Storyteller and worked on designs for other film and media ventures.
Froud also partnered with Terry Jones, the screenwriter of Labyrinth, to create several books, including one of Froud’s most beloved works, Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Book.
More recently, Brian Froud published the sequel to the best-selling Faeries book by Froud and Lee. Titled Good Faeries/Bad Faeries, it has been highly praised and warmly embraced by his extensive fanbase.
Over the years, Brian Froud has produced some of the most respected and acclaimed folklore and mythic artwork of our time. He has received numerous awards, including the ASFA Best Interior Illustration and the Hugo Award for Best Original Artwork in 1995. Through his distinctive style, employing acrylics, colored pencils, pastels, and ink, Froud has created some of the most iconic fantasy imagery of the twenty-first century. He continues to craft visual, spiritual, and poetic stories that will endure for many years to come.
