Dean Hargrove, born on July 27, 1938, in Iola, Kansas, is an American television producer. After finishing high school, he was offered a position as a comedy writer. In 1962, he earned an Emmy nomination for his work on The Bob Newhart Show (1961).
Following the cancellation of Newhart, Hargrove wrote for My Three Sons (1960) in 1963, then became a staff writer in 1964 for the spy series The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (1964). In addition to "U.N.C.L.E.," he contributed to shows like Jericho (1966) and The Girl from U.N.C.L.E. (1966), both produced by MGM Television and Norman Felton's Arena Productions.
After "U.N.C.L.E." ended, Hargrove joined Universal Studios, where he remained until 1977. During this period, he wrote scripts for The Name of the Game (1968), Columbo (1971), and McCoy (1975), and produced TV shows such as Madigan (1972) and The Family Holvak (1975), becoming the highest-paid writer in the studio's history.
In 1972, he founded Strathmore Productions, an independent film production company, and wrote and directed The Manchu Eagle Murder Caper Mystery (1975). Five years later, he left Universal and partnered with Roland Kibbee at Viacom to establish Kibbee/Hargrove Productions, producing Dear Detective (1979) and Snavely (1978).
Hargrove and Kibbee dissolved their partnership in 1980. Hargrove closed two production companies and became president of Henry Winkler's Fair Dinkum Productions, overseeing projects like Gabe and Walker (1981) and Ryan's Four (1983), both made for Paramount and ABC.
In 1982, he left Fair Dinkum and revived Strathmore Productions as a television production company. He secured a deal with Warner Bros. Television, where he wrote a script for an unsold pilot that was adapted into an episode of Scarecrow and Mrs. King (1983) and produced Goldie and the Bears (1985).
In 1984, Strathmore left Warner Bros. and moved to Viacom Productions, where Hargrove had worked previously from 1977 to 1980. There, he served as writer and producer on Me and Mom (1985), the Perry Mason telemovies, Matlock (1986), Jake and the Fatman (1987), Father Dowling Mysteries (1989), and Diagnosis Murder (1993), often collaborating with producers Fred Silverman and Joel Steiger. He remained at Viacom until 1997, after which he joined Columbia TriStar Television.
At Sony/Columbia, his credits included Tequila & Bonetti (2000), As If (2001), Sea of Souls (2004), and Demons (2009). In 2002, he signed with Hallmark Entertainment, working on telemovies such as Murder 101, Jane Doe, and McBride, before transitioning to independent producing.
