Adam Smith is an award-winning director known for his work in film, television drama, documentaries, and music videos. His filmmaking career began in his teenage years, creating visuals for raves and nightclubs as part of a creative collective he co-founded called Vegetable Vision.
Smith launched his television directing career in 2007, directing four episodes of the series Skins. He later directed episodes of BBC One’s Little Dorrit, adapted from Charles Dickens' novel. In 2010, he directed the opening episode of Doctor Who's fifth series revival, "The Eleventh Hour," as well as episodes four and five, "The Time of Angels" and "Flesh and Stone." For his work on Doctor Who, readers of Doctor Who Magazine voted him best director.
Since their first concert in 1994, Smith has collaborated closely with The Chemical Brothers, crafting surreal and visionary video elements for their live performances. His music video for their track "Galvanise" earned the Grand Jury Prize for Best Music Video at Resfest 2005. In 2012, he directed the critically acclaimed concert film Don't Think, featuring The Chemical Brothers, which garnered Best Live Film at the Music Video Awards 2012 and received five stars from Empire Magazine, praised for capturing the electrifying essence of live dance.
In 2015, Smith and creative partner Marcus Lyall co-directed The Chemical Brothers' Born In The Echoes world tour, which included headline performances at Glastonbury, Primavera, and Sonar Festivals. They designed visuals combining props, film, animation, and lighting. The Guardian described the tour as "an all-round aesthetic explosion and gargantuan visual show." Smith also operated music, lighting, and visuals live on stage, filling in for Ed Simons. The Telegraph called the show "simply mesmerising," while FACT Magazine hailed their Glastonbury headline set as "the most impressive of the weekend," and Mixmag labeled it a "must see." Digital Spy noted that Smith’s immersive visuals revitalized the duo’s live performance, delivering a thrilling and powerful stage experience. In July 2015, Nowness featured a collection of the tour’s visuals alongside an interview with Smith.
Smith has also collaborated extensively with Mike Skinner of The Streets. His banned-from-TV video for "Blinded by the Light" won the DMA Best Video award in 2004 and received a D&AD Silver Pencil nomination in 2005. His comedic musical extended music video, What Goes Up Must Come Down, starring Charlie Creed Miles and featuring a cameo by Kathy Burke, won the Golden Falcon Award at the Ibiza Film Festival in 2007.
He has directed commercials for Nike, starring Wayne Rooney, The National Lottery, and The Children's Society. His short film Desire, created for the Jaguar F-Type launch and starring Damian Lewis and Shannyn Sossamon, premiered at Sundance London in 2013. His documentaries for Channel 4 include an early exploration of the grime music scene, Wot Do U Call It?, and A.I.P.S, which profiles a group of Englishmen reenacting the Vietnam War in Kent. For BBC THREE, he created Ghetto on Sea, documenting the challenges of running a pirate radio station.
