Nikhil Sane, a distinguished producer and the leading figure of Marathi cinema at Zee Studios, hails from a modest family in Thane, Maharashtra. Educated in both Mumbai and Pune, he began his career with Zee, initially serving as the programming head of Zee Marathi, where he popularized reality shows on television. Fully committed to his role in strategy development, he also contributed to brand creation, programming slots, and events for Zee Talkies. During this time, Sane recognized the value of strong concepts and has since consistently championed innovative content that has established a unique presence for Marathi television and cinema in the regional market.
In 2008, he was promoted to business head of the Marathi cluster, overseeing Zee Marathi, Zee Talkies, and Marathi film production. He transitioned into film production with the successful movie De Dhakka, followed by several other projects that progressively elevated standards in the Marathi film industry. His collaborations with writer-directors Mahesh Manjrekar, Nagraj Manjule, and Ravi Jadhav, as well as the music duo Ajay-Atul, grew significantly during this period, forming some of the most celebrated partnerships of his career. He has worked with prominent artists such as Nana Patekar, Sachin Pilgaonkar, Riteish Deshmukh, Shankar Mahadevan, Ankush Choudhari, Subodh Bhave, Girish Kulkarni, and leading actresses including Sai Tamhankar, Amruta Khanvilkar, Priya Bapat, Mukta Barve, and Sonali Kulkarni. His creative journey also involved collaborations with filmmakers Paresh Mokashi, Nishikant Kamat, Rajesh Mapuskar, Avinash Arun, and Sanjay Jadhav.
A major milestone was the production of Natarang under Zee Talkies, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Ravi Jadhav. The film earned the National Award for Best Feature Film in Marathi and won seven out of sixteen nominations at the Zee Gaurav Awards. It offered a fresh perspective on traditional regional stories.
Following this success, Sane’s appreciation for compelling storytelling became even more evident in his choice of projects. Films like Fandry, Elizabeth Ekadeshie, Killa, Lai Bhari, Dr. Prakash Baba Amte, TimePass 1 & 2, and Duniyadari are recognized for bridging the gap between art house and commercial cinema. These movies became some of the highest-grossing in Marathi cinema history, reflecting growing audience engagement.
Productions such as Katyar Kaljat Ghusali, Sairat, and Natsamrat further enhanced his reputation and solidified Zee Studios’ role as a pioneer in the Marathi film industry. Together, the studio and Sane established a foundation that nurtures strong, rooted content, transforming it into a collection of exceptional artistic works. Additionally, Sane has consistently prioritized socially and politically significant themes in his films, responsibly portraying Maharashtra's landscape and sharing credit with his filmmakers.
Another significant collaboration is with director Nagraj Manjule, resulting in Marathi cinema’s most successful film, Sairat. The film received international acclaim and shattered box office records. The music by Ajay-Atul crossed cultural boundaries, reaffirming Sane’s belief that cinema, through its storytelling, possesses a universal language capable of reaching global audiences. Sairat also became the first regional film to be digitally acquired by Netflix and the first Indian production to have its music recorded at the prestigious Sony MGM Studios in Hollywood. With upcoming films Nude and Faster Fene, Sane aims to continue empowering Marathi cinema, ensuring it stands firmly on the strength of its stories and artistic merit.
