MICHAEL HAMISH BUDD is an acclaimed Australian film actor, director, and producer. He has worked alongside actors who have won Primetime Emmy, Golden Globe, and AACTA awards.
In 2023, artist Eliza Godman created a portrait of Michael Budd titled "Remembering" for the Archibald Prize. The artwork depicts Budd seated in a director's chair with his grandmother looking over his shoulder. Godman, an AFI Best Costume Design winner for Baz Luhrmann's film Australia, met Michael on a commercial set, leading to their collaboration.
Michael is widely recognized for his role as Esmael in The Cold Light of Day, starring Henry Cavill and Sigourney Weaver, alongside Bruce Willis. His first significant film opportunity was as a body double and stand-in for Laurence Fishburne in The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions, working over 200 shoot days. Directors Lilly and Lana Wachowski noticed his talent and cast him as Zion Controller.
Michael gained national and international attention as the director and producer of Ruby's Choice, featuring two-time Golden Globe winner Jane Seymour O.B.E. and Jacqueline McKenzie.
On September 24, 2023, at the Burbank International Film Festival (BIFF), Michael Budd won Best Foreign Film and Best Feature Film for Ruby's Choice. The festival, which honored filmmaker Tim Burton, was attended by numerous celebrities. Despite significant challenges—including logistical issues, production cuts, and a location change during the pandemic—Michael demonstrated exceptional leadership and resilience to complete the film.
Ruby's Choice premiered on March 7, 2022, at the 37th Santa Barbara International Film Festival, where it was nominated for Best International Feature Film.
Raised in Sydney's eastern suburbs, Michael developed a passion for acting and filmmaking. After traveling extensively, he studied in London at the Impulse Company and Actors Centre in the West End. Mentored by second-generation Meisner tutor Scott Williams and influenced by William Ball, Michael graduated from the Meisner technique in 2010. He has performed on stage in works by Chekhov, Shakespeare, and Mamet.
In 2012-2013, Michael directed, produced, and starred in the horror thriller Love of My Life alongside Logie winner Peter O'Brien and Diarmid Heidenreich. The film premiered on November 9, 2013, at the Mt. Hood Independent Film Festival in Oregon, where it won Best Horror/Thriller.
Love of My Life was released on V.O.D. on April 29, 2014, by Gravitas Ventures, reaching 100 million homes across the U.S. and selling in several European countries.
Michael completed Life of the Party, which had its American premiere on September 24, 2018, at the Arena Cinelounge in Hollywood, California. The screenplay was selected by the Oscars Foundation for inclusion in the permanent Core Collection at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Library. In May 2017, he directed, produced, and starred in Enter Sanctum, a sci-fi film scheduled for release in 2023.
