Danish film director Birgitte Stærmose was educated in the United States, where she lived for 14 years. Her early award-winning short films were showcased at prestigious festivals such as Sundance, New Directors/New Films, Berlin, and Rotterdam. These works earned her two nominations for the European Film Awards Best Short Film, along with awards at Berlin, Rotterdam, Melbourne International Film Festival, Stockholm International Film Festival, Dokufest, and the Danish Academy Award for Best Documentary for Out of Love. Her debut feature film, Room 304, premiered internationally in the main competition at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, where it received an award for its score and was subsequently released in cinemas nationwide. She also co-wrote the feature film The Idealist, directed by Christina Rosendahl. In 2015, Stærmose directed three episodes of the Danish TV2 drama series Norskov, which aired in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, the UK, the Benelux countries, and the US. Her second feature film, Darling, a drama set in the Royal Danish Ballet, written by Kim Fupz Aakeson and produced by Peter Ålbæk of Zentropa Productions, starred Danica Curcic, Gustaf Skarsgård, and Ulrich Thomsen. It screened in Danish cinemas in the fall of 2017 and had its international world premiere at the BFI London Film Festival 2017. Danica Curcic received nominations for Best Actress from the Danish Film Academy and the Bodil Award from the Danish Film Critics. Stærmose served as the first block director on the Starz series The Spanish Princess and the Julian Fellowes Netflix Original series The English Game.
