Robin Hawdon launched his acting career in the 1960s with roles in numerous British TV series and various feature films. He starred as the male lead in When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth (1970) and appeared as a spoof James Bond in The Love Factor (1969). On stage, Hawdon performed a wide range of roles in London and regional theatres, portraying characters from Hamlet and Henry V to Henry Higgins. In the 1980s, he founded the Bath Fringe Festival and later became director of the Theatre Royal Bath, the UK's leading touring theatre. Initially supplementing his acting with writing, he eventually focused on playwriting, producing works such as The Mating Game, Don't Dress for Dinner, and God and Stephen Hawking. His first novel, A Rustle in the Grass, published by Hutchinsons in 1984, is a story about war between ant colonies and sold 60,000 copies. His second novel, The Journey, appeared in 2002, followed by Survival of the Fittest in 2013, a novel centered on Charles Darwin. All are available on his website.
Robin Hawdon's plays have been performed in over forty countries and translated into thirty languages, with many published. Also a novelist, his debut epic Young Adult novel, A Rustle in the Grass, has been republished and garnered numerous five-star Amazon reviews. His most recent novel, Survival of the Fittest, is similarly receiving five-star acclaim.
Hawdon retired from acting in 1980 to focus on writing. His plays, particularly his comedies, rank among the most frequently produced worldwide. He is often better known internationally than in his native Great Britain. At any given time, around twenty productions of his works are running globally, including major performances in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Paris, Berlin, Bonn, Warsaw, Johannesburg, Sydney, Tel Aviv, Russia, and Italy.
