Tony Young, the dark, agile, and handsome son of radio, TV, and film character actor Carleton G. Young, was introduced early to the workings of Hollywood. Born in New York in 1937, he grew up in Hollywood as his father's on-camera roles increased. Although Tony received film offers in his teenage years during the early 1950s, his father insisted he complete a proper education before pursuing an acting career.
After serving in the US Air Force, Tony attended Los Angeles City College. Starting as an NBC page, his passion for acting remained strong, leading to TV roles beginning in 1959 on western series like Overland Trail (1960), The Deputy (1959), Bronco (1958), and Laramie (1959), along with minor film roles in Walk Like a Dragon (1960) and The Marriage-Go-Round (1961).
In 1961, Tony starred in his own weekly TV western, Gunslinger, playing a cavalry undercover agent. Though short-lived, the show typecast him as a western actor. He appeared in low-budget western films such as He Rides Tall (1964), portraying a U.S. marshal, and Taggart (1964), where he was accused of murder and sought to prove his innocence.
Tony also made guest appearances on popular TV series including Star Trek (1966), The Virginian (1962), Medical Center (1969), Bonanza (1959), and The Streets of San Francisco (1972).
He later transitioned to supporting character roles, acting alongside Elvis Presley in the western Charro! (1969) and James Garner in the Italian spaghetti western A Man Called Sledge (1970). In the early 1970s, he took parts in action-adventure and blaxploitation films such as Chrome and Hot Leather (1971), Play It As It Lays (1972), Black Gunn (1972), Superchick (1973), and The Outfit (1973).
Tony was married and divorced three times, all to actresses: first briefly to Playboy playmate Connie Mason, then to Madlyn Rhue, with whom he had one child and co-starred before and after their divorce, and finally to Sondra Currie. His father passed away from cancer in 1971 at age 64. Tony retired from acting in the early 1990s and died of lung cancer in 2002 at the same age as his father.
