Adolfo E. Urrutia was born on October 3, 1944, in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, to Puerto Rican parents of Basque descent. His father, Carlos E. Urrutia, was a U.S. Army officer, and his mother was Lavinia M. Lopez. He has an older brother named Carlos J. Urrutia. He graduated from Karlsruhe American High School in Karlsruhe, Germany, in 1959, and from Carroll High School in Ozark, Alabama, in 1963. Urrutia served in the U.S. Army from June 1963 to June 1966, including assignments with the 101st Airborne Division, the 11th Air Assault Division (Test), and the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). He was deployed to Vietnam from August 1965 to June 1966 and received the Parachutist Badge, Combat Infantry Badge for action at Plei Me, and the South Vietnamese Army Parachutist Badge.
Before pursuing an acting career, he worked as a sales representative for IBM, 3M Company, and Xerox Corporation. Utilizing the G.I. Bill, he studied acting at the Theater of Arts in Los Angeles. He appeared in numerous Actors Equity Waiver stage productions, including a lead role in Say Uncle Sam, an original play by Lester Cole, a founding member of the Screen Writers and Authors Guild and one of the Hollywood Ten blacklisted during the McCarthy era. The play was produced by Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland. While performing in the stage play Harvey in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Urrutia was cast in a featured role in the Italian film L'uomo dagli occhi di ghiaccio (The Man with the Icy Eyes), starring Antonio Sabato, Keenan Wynn, and Victor Buono.
