Enid Blyton (11 August 1897 – 28 November 1968) was a renowned English author born in Dulwich, South London. She became one of the most famous and prolific children's writers worldwide, having written numerous books. Her best-known works include the Famous Five series, which follows four children—Dick, Julian, Anne, and Georgina (who preferred to be called George)—and their dog Timmy on various adventures, as well as the Noddy books aimed at younger children.
Although her parents hoped she would become a concert pianist, Enid wished to be a teacher, and they eventually supported her decision. She began teaching in 1919 in Kent, near her childhood home in Beckenham.
During her youth, she enjoyed writing poems and stories, submitting many to magazines without success. While teaching, she started publishing articles about children and education in the magazine Teachers' World. Her first book, Child Whispers, a collection of poems with illustrations, was published in 1922.
Shortly after, she married and left teaching to focus on writing. She contributed to and edited the children's magazine Sunny Stories, which was so popular it was renamed Enid Blyton's Sunny Stories. The magazine was issued biweekly, and many of her famous books were initially serialized there.
Enid Blyton holds a place in The Guinness Book of Records as one of the world's best-selling authors, having written around 700 books, more than nearly any other writer. Her works have been translated into many languages. She described writing as an easy task. In her later years, she suffered from presenile dementia, a condition that affected her mind. Her books continue to sell well; originally owned by her family, the rights were sold to a private company several years ago.
In addition to writing, Enid Blyton was active in charity work and ran a children's club that helped raise funds for charitable causes. She was married twice and had two daughters. She passed away from Alzheimer's disease in Hampstead, London.
