Hanneke Niens is a Dutch film and drama series producer, Oscar-nominated, and CEO of KeyFilm. In the 1990s, she worked as a line producer and Head of Drama for various companies, producing over 300 television drama episodes. Since 1999, she has been producing and co-producing numerous feature films, telemovies, drama series, and documentaries, spanning from accessible art house to mainstream films for both national and international audiences, with an emphasis on intelligent, character-driven narratives. She strongly believes in cinema as a collaborative effort, beginning with the producer-writer-director triangle. Hanneke co-founded IDTV Film, where she was a producer from 1999 to 2008. In 2008, she founded KeyFilm and later established its subsidiary, KeyDocs. She maintains an extensive international network of co-producers, funding bodies, sales agents, and financiers.
Her productions include award-winning and festival-recognized films such as the thriller Godforsaken (San Sebastian Competition, 2003), the epic drama Twin Sisters (Oscar nomination for Best International Feature Film, 2004), the remake Unfinished Sky (TIFF Competition, 2007), the documentary This Is My Picture When I Was Dead (IDFA Competition, 2010), the drama Silent City (San Sebastian Competition, 2012), the romantic comedies Soof (2013), Soof 2 (2016), and Soof 3 (2022) which grossed €19 million at the Dutch box office, the coming-of-age drama Nena (Generation Plus Jury Award, Berlinale 2015), Beyond Sleep (Opening Film IFFR 2016), The Reports on Sarah and Saleem (Tiger Award for Best Scenario and HBF Audience Award, 2018), Huda's Salon (Official Selection TIFF 2021), and Queens (Closing Film Venice Critics' Week 2022). Her films have earned honors including an Oscar nomination, an Emmy Award, three Prix Europa awards, EFA shortlistings, and numerous Dutch Film Awards for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay.
Hanneke has served as a guest tutor at the Netherlands Film and Television Academy and EAVE. She is a member of the European Producers Club (EPC) and the Netherlands Association of Producers (NAPA), where she was a board member from 2004 to 2010. Additionally, she was part of the supervisory board of the International Film Festival Rotterdam from 2019 to 2025.
