John Farnham is considered Australia's leading performer, with a career spanning over 30 years. Born in Essex, England, he moved to Australia in 1959 at the age of 10. Since his debut in 1967, Farnham has achieved numerous successes as a solo artist. His 1986 album Whispering Jack remains Australia's best-selling album by a local artist, with sales exceeding 1.4 million copies. For this achievement, Farnham received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Australian Record Industry Association. Beyond Australia, Whispering Jack and the hit single You're the Voice topped charts across Europe, England, and Canada. The multi-award-winning singer was named Australian of the Year in 1988. In 1989, Farnham was invited to launch Greenpeace's 'Rainbow Warriors' album in Moscow. In 1992, he portrayed Jesus in the Australian cast of Jesus Christ Superstar - The Album and subsequently toured with the stage production. That same year, he received the Australian Music Awards' Crystal Trophy for Outstanding Contribution to the Industry. On Australia Day 1996, he was honored with the Order of Australia for his services to music and charity. Throughout his career, Farnham has undertaken numerous tours both locally and internationally, including a national tour with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. His Australian tours are famous for breaking attendance records, notably the 1990 Chain Reaction Tour, which featured eight sold-out shows at Melbourne Park. The 1996 Jack of Hearts Live in the Round Australian tour, a $5 million production, was broadcast live on national television and simultaneously simulcast on national radio. Following Whispering Jack, Farnham released several albums—Age of Reason, Chain Reaction, Full House, Then Again, and Romeo's Heart—all of which earned notable awards and strong sales. In late 1997, the Anthology series was released: Anthology 1 (3× Platinum), Anthology 2 (Platinum), and Anthology 3 (Gold). That year, Farnham was also recognized as the Most Broadcast Australian Recording Artist by the Phonographic Performance Company of Australia. In 1998, he toured Australia alongside Olivia Newton-John and Anthony Warlow in The Main Event, backed by The John Farnham Band and a 40-piece orchestra. This spectacular production sold nearly 300,000 tickets during its limited run. The accompanying album, Highlights from The Main Event, achieved Quad Platinum status within four weeks of release. In 1999, Farnham celebrated his 50th birthday with the I Can't Believe He's 50 tour.
