Randy spent his childhood alternating between the beaches and baseball fields of Southern California and the mountains and basketball courts of North Carolina, a result of his parents' divorce. His father, Ralph, worked as a high school business teacher and accountant in Escondido, while his mother, Joyce, from North Carolina, was a secretary and elementary school teacher. Randy's older brother, Perry, is an art professor in San Diego. After acting in plays throughout elementary and high school, Randy was admitted to UCLA, where he attempted to join both the theatre department and the baseball team but was rejected from both. He left after one quarter and set out independently in Los Angeles. In 1981, he met his acting teacher and mentor, Antony Ponzini. Through Antony, Randy connected with his future manager, Robert P. Marcucci. The Taylor Hackford film, The Idolmaker, was inspired by Robert's career managing pop singers Frankie Avalon and Fabian. Bob represented Randy for over 25 years, during which time Randy secured four series regular roles on Acapulco H.E.A.T., Love Boat: The Next Wave, JAG, and First Monday. Randy has performed in over forty plays across Los Angeles theaters and appeared Off-Broadway in Jose Rivera's "Each Day Dies With Sleep" in 1990 at the renowned Circle Rep Theatre, along with several Off-Off-Broadway productions. In 2003, he began a fruitful collaboration with Mexican director Beto Gomez, working together on Punos Rosas (2005), Saving Private Perez (2011), and Volando Bajo (2014). Randy has directed and produced three award-winning documentaries: "Testimony: The Maria Guardado Story," which chronicles a Salvadoran woman's survival of death squads in 1980 and her journey to the United States; and two Native American-themed documentaries, "The Thick Dark Fog" and "Badger Creek," both of which aired on PBS. He resides with actress Marilyn Sanabria.
