Henning Lohner grew up near Palo Alto, California, to German immigrant parents. He returned to Germany to study musicology at Frankfurt University, earning his MA in 1987. In 1985, Lohner became an assistant to German composer Karlheinz Stockhausen, who introduced him to visual media while working at La Scala in Milan on Stockhausen's opera "Licht." In 1989, Lohner served as musical advisor to Louis Malle on the film "May Fools," featuring Michel Piccoli. He collaborated extensively with Frank Zappa as music producer on projects like "Peefeeyatko" (1991) and "The Yellow Shark" (1992), and worked with John Cage on "one11 and 103" (1992). He also produced and directed music films including "The Revenge of the Dead Indians" (1993) and "In a Metal Mood" (1996), starring Pat Boone. Lohner's audio-visual installation "raw material, vol. 1-11" (since 1995) has been showcased at prominent European venues such as the Gemeente Museum in The Hague, the Sonic Art Festival in Rome, and the Berlin Video Art Festival. In 1996, he relocated to Los Angeles and joined Hans Zimmer's "Media Ventures" (now "Remote Control") film music studio. After working on films like "Broken Arrow," "Gladiator," and "The Thin Red Line," Lohner contributed additional music to Zimmer's scores for "Laura's Star," Jim Brooks' "Spanglish," and co-composed "Ring One," starring Naomi Watts. To date, he has scored over 40 feature films, with a particular passion for horror and thriller genres. This includes composing for "The Ring Two" (again starring Naomi Watts), "Bloodrayne" (featuring Sir Ben Kingsley, Kristanna Loken, and Michael Madsen), the thriller "Timber Falls" produced by Arnold Rifkin, and the epic "Dungeon Siege - In the Name of the King" (starring Jason Statham, Burt Reynolds, and Ray Liotta). Alongside his work on darker films, Lohner enjoys scoring comedies such as "Incident at Loch Ness," directed by and starring Werner Herzog and Zak Penn; romantic comedies like "Love Comes Lately," which premiered at Sundance in 2008; as well as dramas and family films including the European animated hits "Laura's Christmas" and "Der kleine Dodo." More recently, he scored the Italian coming-of-age film "Marcello Marcello," set in 1950s Naples, which tells the story of a young man striving to win the heart of the mayor's daughter. In his free time, Lohner serves as a Guest Professor at the prestigious Zurich Academy of Music and Theatre. He divides his time between Berlin, London, and Los Angeles.
