John was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. After earning a B.Sc. from Edinburgh University, he relocated to London, collaborating with various theatre groups and directors such as Nancy Meckler and Pam Brighton. His solo performances began in 1978 with "Come Again," followed by "Troubleshooter," "Members Only," "Dirty Money," and more recently "European Blues," all celebrated worldwide as modern physical theatre-comedy classics. He has performed for a diverse range of audiences, including the Queen of Denmark, African Bushmen, Russian spies, German riot police, Japanese businessmen, Chiapas Indians, prisoners, pensioners, and children. His first film role was the lead in Vana Paoli's "Lungo il Fiume" (1989), and since then, he has appeared in both feature films and shorts whenever his busy theatre schedule permitted. In 2001, he won the Best Actor award at the Brooklyn Film Festival for his role as Harley in "No Man's Land" (Nina Rosenmeier). In 2009, he starred as Quenzel in "Blindspot," which he co-wrote with director Ad Bol; the film won five awards at various international festivals. More recently, Johnny has been creating his own shorts in Spain and participating in workshop settings. In 2011, his short film "Backtracker" earned him Best Director and Best Actor at the Girona Film Festival, Spain. He also appeared in Javier Llamazares’ half-hour short, winning multiple awards for his portrayal of Oleg, a role he performed in Russian. In 2018, he featured in the acclaimed "Fishbone" and had a minor role in "Paradise Hills" alongside Emma Roberts.
