Virgil Wayne is a filmmaker, writer, and interdisciplinary researcher whose creative work explores narrative power, memory, institutional legitimacy, and the tension between public authority and private belief. Working across narrative film, documentary, critical writing, and emerging media, he is particularly interested in how images and stories shape identity, collective memory, and public trust.
His creative perspective draws on more than two decades of experience across the U.S. military, NATO, the United Nations, academia, and the international private sector. His work has taken him across the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Central Asia, and East and West Africa, placing him inside complex military, political, humanitarian, media, and corporate environments. These experiences provide his filmmaking with a firsthand understanding of conflict, influence, institutional power, and the ways people construct meaning under conditions of uncertainty and change.
Wayne holds an MFA in Independent Film and Digital Imaging and an MS in Film and Television Production, with a concentration in cinematography. His creative interests include cinematic form, archives, adaptation, political imagination, and the Gothic and speculative traditions of Victorian-era literature. Across filmmaking and criticism, his work connects atmosphere, character, and visual composition with broader questions of culture, technology, power, and belief.
