British actress with auburn hair, known for her work on stage and screen, was the youngest of three siblings born in London to naval officer Noel Lawson and his wife Edith (née Monteith). Her grandfather, Francis Wilfred Lawson (1842–1935), was a distinguished Victorian painter and illustrator. Raised in West Sussex, she first appeared on stage in amateur productions at Herons Ghyll Roman Catholic School. She later trained at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating in 1947. Her professional stage debut followed in 1948 with the Perth Theatre repertory company. In 1951, she made her West End debut in Jean Cocteau's play Intimate Relations. Five years later, she portrayed Brenda Paulton, the film producer's wife, in the original cast of Philip Mackie's thriller The Whole Truth at London's Aldwych Theatre.
Starting on screen in 1951, she initially took on a series of ingénue and juvenile secondary roles in B-movies and quota quickies, with her first leading role in the lesser-known mystery drama Meet Mr. Malcolm (1954). That same year, she played a nominal female lead among several beauties in the satirical Cold War naval farce You Know What Sailors Are.
She gained greater recognition for her work in horror and science fiction, starring as one of two psychic sisters investigating mysterious climber deaths in the Swiss Alps in the six-part TV series The Trollenberg Terror (1956). She also appeared in thrillers directed by horror specialist Terence Fisher, both featuring Christopher Lee. In Night of the Big Heat (1967), she co-starred with her husband Patrick Allen as pub owners on a remote island besieged by aliens. In Hammer Film's The Devil Rides Out (1968), based on Dennis Wheatley's 1934 novel, she played Marie Eaton, who is threatened by a satanic cult leader (Charles Gray) and possessed by a dead girl's spirit. Notably, Christopher Lee, known for his Dracula roles, played the hero in both films.
From the late 1960s onwards, she frequently appeared in crime television dramas, either as a regular or guest star in notable series such as Department S (1969), The Persuaders! (1971), Callan (1967) as Soviet spy Flo Mayhew, Father Brown (1974), and Bergerac (1981). She portrayed prison governess Sarah Marshall in twelve episodes of Within These Walls (1974), becoming the third actress to assume the role after Googie Withers and Katharine Blake.
Sarah Elizabeth Lawson retired from acting in 1989 and passed away on August 18, 2023, at the age of 95.
