John Tui was born in Auckland, New Zealand.
He first appeared as Bones in an episode of "Mataku" before gaining recognition for his role as Commander Anubis 'Doggie' Cruger, the S.P.D. Shadow Ranger, in the popular children's series "Power Rangers S.P.D." John uniquely served as both the voice and suit actor for Doggie Cruger, the only actor in the series to do so. He returned to the franchise in the following season, "Power Rangers Mystic Force," portraying Daggeron, the Solaris Knight. John is the only actor to play two different mentor roles who were also Power Rangers, with Daggeron being a human character rather than just a voice or suit role.
Following his Power Rangers tenure, John joined the cast of the New Zealand soap opera "Shortland Street" as Colin 'Dollar' Laws. He also appeared as Wellness Attendant #1 in "This is Not My Life" and as Timbo in "Go Girls." John further gained acclaim for his role as Chief Petty Officer Walter 'The Beast' Lynch.
John's career continued to rise with his role as Bolg in "The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies," where he also performed as the suit actor, drawing on his experience from Power Rangers S.P.D. He has also featured in major film franchises, playing Korso in "Solo: A Star Wars Story" and Kal Hobbs in "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw." In New Zealand cinema, he appeared as Moses in "Savage," Baron To'a in "The Legend of Baron To'a," and Wade in the comedy "Paper Champions."
In 2021, John portrayed real-life wrestler Afa Anoa'i, part of the professional wrestling duo The Wild Samoans, in the television series "Young Rock," which chronicles Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's upbringing in a wrestling family.
In 2026, John played Chief Tui, Moana's father, in Disney's live-action adaptation of "Moana."
When not working, John enjoys time with his wife, Liyah, and their five children.
