Mark Canton's most notable films include 300, 300: Rise of an Empire, The Spiderwick Chronicles, and Immortals. Released in 2007 by Warner Bros. Pictures, 300, adapted from Frank Miller's graphic novel and directed by Zack Snyder, achieved record-breaking box office success, grossing over $460 million worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing March release in film history. The Spiderwick Chronicles, based on the bestselling children's books by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black with Mark Waters (Mean Girls) directing, premiered in February 2008 through Paramount Pictures and was the top-grossing family film of early 2008. Immortals, an epic mythological story set in war-torn ancient Greece, debuted on November 11, 2011, and has earned nearly $250 million globally.
Canton began his career at Warner Bros. as Vice President of Production and advanced to Senior Vice President and President of Worldwide Theatrical Production. During his time there, he played a key role in developing the Batman, Lethal Weapon, and National Lampoon's Vacation franchises. His creative leadership helped launch some of today's most influential filmmakers and produced some of the studio’s most successful movies, including Tim Burton’s Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, Batman, Beetlejuice, the Academy Award-winning Driving Miss Daisy, and Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas. He also oversaw the production of hits such as Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Purple Rain, Above the Law, The Witches of Eastwick, The Mission, and Presumed Innocent.
Canton left Warner Bros. to become Chairman of Columbia Pictures at Sony Pictures Entertainment. He later became Chairman of Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Companies, overseeing all creative, operational, and management functions for Columbia Pictures, Triumph Films, Sony Pictures Classics, Sony Pictures Entertainment's international theatrical operations, and Columbia TriStar's strategic motion picture partnerships.
Under Canton's leadership at Sony, films produced included the Academy Award-winning As Good as It Gets, starring Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt; the Oscar-winning Jerry Maguire, featuring Tom Cruise and Cuba Gooding Jr.; Men in Black, with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones; the romantic comedy My Best Friend’s Wedding, starring Julia Roberts; the thriller Anaconda; and Wolfgang Petersen’s Air Force One, starring Harrison Ford.
A New York native, Canton graduated magna cum laude from UCLA and is a member of UCLA's National Honor Society for American Studies. He delivered the 2011 commencement address at UCLA's School of History. Canton serves on the UCLA Board of Councilors and the Dean’s Advisory Board for the School of Theatre, Film, and Television. He was Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the American Film Institute and is Founder and Chairman Emeritus of AFI’s Third Decade Council. Recently, he has served as Honorary Chair of both the Ischia Global Film & Music Festival and the Los Angeles Italia Film Festival.
