John Heffron, the winner of NBC's second season of "Last Comic Standing," has emerged as a comedian to watch. The Detroit native, dubbed "the cute one" by Phyllis Diller, earned a talent contract with NBC along with other exciting opportunities. Reflecting on his time on the show, John remarked, "It's a lot like high school... there are good and bad memories, but in the end, I think I'll only remember the good ones."
John began his comedy journey while attending Eastern Michigan University, often skipping night classes to perform stand-up. His first emcee gig was at the Main Street Comedy Showcase on the University of Michigan campus. After graduating, he toured the college circuit, performing at over 80 colleges annually. By then, he had more than four years of experience. His humor, which touched on college life, retro music, and childhood memories like playing with Pop Rocks, resonated with college audiences. This popularity led to his first comedy CD, "Kid With A Cape."
By 25, John was a successful headliner and utilized his communications and psychology degrees by becoming a radio sidekick to Danny Bonaduce on a popular Detroit morning show, where he worked for five years before relocating to Los Angeles. Since moving to Hollywood, he has appeared on numerous TV programs including NBC's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," CBS's "The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn," and two "Comedy Central Presents" specials. He has also performed at renowned events like the Just For Laughs Comedy Festivals in Montreal and Bermuda, and the HBO Comedy Festival in Aspen.
In addition to comedy, John co-created The "That Guy!" Game with partner Joel Zimmer, a card game that sends girls on a scavenger hunt for men. The game quickly gained popularity, with celebrities such as Julia Roberts, Drew Barrymore, and SNL’s Rachel Dratch spotted purchasing it, and it was featured in InStyle, Entertainment Weekly, and Glamour magazines. Entrepreneur magazine included John and Joel in its 2001 "Hot 100" list. They further developed the concept into a pilot that attracted significant industry interest. John explained, "The idea took nearly three years to come to fruition. It was while we were both recovering from breakups that we decided to really focus on it.
