Sergio Trujillo is a globally acclaimed choreographer. Born in Colombia, raised in Canada, and now an American citizen residing in New York City, he won the 2015 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Theatre Choreographer for Memphis.
Growing up in Toronto, Trujillo studied sciences at the University of Toronto and attended chiropractic school.
He described his motivation to become a choreographer: "I knew that Fosse was going to be my last show. I started feeling restricted and suffocated by someone else's work. I wasn't able to express myself, and I needed to change that."
In 2011, Trujillo had the unique distinction of having four shows running simultaneously on Broadway: Memphis (winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical and nominated for Olivier, Outer Critics Circle, Drama Desk, and Astaire Awards), Jersey Boys (Tony and Olivier Award-winning Best Musical with nominations for Greenroom, Olivier, Drama Desk, Dora, and Outer Critics Circle Awards), The Addams Family, and Next to Normal, which won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize.
Trujillo made his Broadway debut as a performer in Jerome Robbins' Broadway in 1989 and later appeared in Guys and Dolls (1992), Victor/Victoria (1998), and Fosse (1999). He debuted as a choreographer with All Shook Up in 2005. That same year, he choreographed Jersey Boys on Broadway, which has since enjoyed worldwide success.
He choreographed The Addams Family musical, which had its out-of-town tryouts in Chicago in December 2009 and opened on Broadway in March 2010.
Trujillo choreographed the Broadway production of Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, earning him a Chita Rivera Award for Dance and Choreography. His other Broadway credits include On Your Feet! The Emilio and Gloria Estefan Musical, Hands on a Hardbody (Drama Desk nomination), Leap of Faith, and the 2009 Guys and Dolls (Astaire Award nomination).
Beyond Broadway, he directed and choreographed Arrabal at the American Repertory Theater in Boston, which earned him an Elliott Norton Award for direction. He also worked on Gloria Estefan on Broadway at the Minskoff Theatre and Flashdance the Musical, which toured North America from 2013 to 2015.
Off-Broadway, Trujillo choreographed Invisible Thread (2015), Bare: A Pop Opera (2004), A Tree Grows in Brooklyn for City Center Encores!, The Great American Trailer Park Musical (2005), Romeo & Juliet for The Public Theater/Shakespeare in the Park (2007), Kismet for Encores!, and Saved (2008) at Playwrights Horizons, which earned a Lucille Lortel Award nomination.
His regional theatre work includes Mambo Kings in San Francisco; Zhivago and The Wiz at La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego; a U.S. tour of Kiss of the Spider Woman (as a performer in the mid-1990s); and West Side Story at the Stratford Festival in Canada in 1999 and 2009. He also choreographed The Wedding Banquet at the Village Theatre in 2003. In the West End, he choreographed Peggy Sue Got Married and the Disney musical Tarzan in Scheveningen in 2007.
Additional theatre credits include Carmen; An Afro-Cuban Musical (Helen Hayes Award nomination), Kiss of the Spider Woman at North Shore Music Theatre, Kiss Me Kate in Tokyo, Needfire at the Royal Alexandra Theatre, a musical adaptation of Twelfth Night in Tokyo, and segments of Chita Rivera's Chita and All That Jazz.
