Born in Mexico City, Ilya Salkind was immersed in the film industry from an early age. At just one year old, he was photographed on Zsa Zsa Gabor’s lap. His grandfather, Michael Salkind, was a silent film pioneer who produced The Joyless Street (1925), which starred a then-unknown Greta Garbo in her breakthrough role. Michael and his son Alexander Salkind later produced numerous acclaimed films, including Orson Welles’s The Trial (1962). Continuing this legacy, Ilya became the third generation of successful filmmakers, working across Paris, Rome, London, Madrid, New York, and Los Angeles. He is fluent in French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and English.
Starting his producing career early, Ilya built an impressive filmography. Alongside his father and grandfather, he produced the global hits The Three Musketeers (1973) and The Four Musketeers (1974), pioneering the simultaneous shooting of a film and its sequel. His work on The Three Musketeers earned him a Golden Globe nomination.
Ilya then launched the hugely successful Superman franchise, one of the most iconic in cinema history. The Academy Award-winning Superman (1978) was the first major comic book film adaptation. Under his guidance, the film and its first two sequels became worldwide successes, with Superman II (1980) earning Best Science Fiction Film from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films. His TV venture, Superboy (1988–1992), ran for four seasons and 100 episodes, receiving recognition from the Young Artist Awards as a top family series. After producing the $50 million Christopher Columbus: The Discovery (1992), starring Marlon Brando, Benicio Del Toro, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, Ilya and his wife Jane Chaplin (daughter of Charlie Chaplin and granddaughter of Eugene O’Neill) settled in Orlando, Florida, taking a sabbatical to raise their two sons. They amicably separated in 1999.
Now based in Los Angeles and heading The Ilya Salkind Company, Inc., he is completing Born to Be Great (2010), filmed in Egypt and Greece, about the young Alexander the Great. The film has launched the careers of several previously unknown actors: Sam Heughan ("Young Alexander") signed by ICM, Paul Telfer ("Hephaestion") selected from 200 candidates to star in the $25 million miniseries Hercules, Lauren Cohan ("Leto") starring alongside Heath Ledger in Casanova, and Louis Tamone ("Thessaly") becoming a regular on the British TV show Hollyoaks. Throughout his career, Ilya has been known for discovering new talent, including Christopher Reeve (Superman), Helen Slater (Supergirl), Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Benicio Del Toro (Christopher Columbus: The Discovery). The Alexander the Great film, targeting a teen audience, was set for a summer 2006 release.
The Ilya Salkind Company is also in pre-production for the major film The Abominable Snowman, based on the centuries-old legend and one of the world’s greatest mysteries. Ilya envisions it continuing the blockbuster legacy of Superman and The Three Musketeers. He stated, "With today’s limitless filmmaking technologies, the timing is perfect. We are assembling the world’s top creative team to vividly bring this mythical being to life on screen." Additionally, Ilya returns to the visionary works of Jules Verne—his first film with his father was based on Verne’s Light at the Edge of the World, starring Kirk Douglas and Yul Brynner—with the upcoming major motion picture event The Nautilus. This project is part of a diverse slate of internationally appealing film and television developments underway at his company.
