Kathie Browne, born Jacqueline Sue Browne on September 19, 1930, in San Luis Obispo, California, launched her television career after performing in a Los Angeles production of Tennessee Williams's "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof." She made her TV debut in 1957 with appearances on The Gray Ghost, The Sheriff of Cochise, and Gunsmoke. The following year, she made her film debut in the B-movie Murder by Contract (1958), though television remained her primary focus. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the blonde-haired, blue-eyed actress frequently guest-starred on numerous TV shows, often portraying ingénue roles.
One of her most notable roles was as Laura Dayton, the prospective bride of Adam Cartwright, during the 1963-64 season of Bonanza. She had previously appeared twice on the series in 1961 and 1962 as different characters before being cast as Laura, a charming widow featured in four episodes aired between December 8, 1963, and May 17, 1964—the penultimate episode of that season. Laura was intended to marry Adam and leave with him, as Pernell Roberts, who played Adam, was considering leaving the show. NBC, which owned the series, brought in Guy Williams as a potential replacement. However, Roberts stayed for another season, and Browne’s character ended up riding off with Adam’s cousin, Will Cartwright, played by Williams. Following her regular role on the short-lived western Hondo (1967), Browne delivered a memorable performance in the 1968 Star Trek episode "Wink of an Eye," portraying a captivating Scalosian woman who develops an attraction to Captain Kirk.
In 1969, Browne married actor Darren McGavin, with whom she frequently appeared on screen, including in his starring role on Kolchak: The Night Stalker (1974) during the 1970s. She retired from acting in 1980.
Kathie Browne, legally Jacqueline K. McGavin, passed away on April 8, 2003, in Beverly Hills, California, at the age of 72.
