Biographie
Alex McDowell is an acclaimed production designer renowned for blending design, technology, and storytelling. Following his role as designer for Minority Report in 2002, he established a multidisciplinary narrative design practice focused on world-building. As creative director at Experimental Design, he develops immersive worlds across various media for diverse industries and institutions. He serves as a Professor of Practice at USC's School of Cinematic Arts, holding the William Cameron Menzies Chair in Production Design. McDowell leads the USC World Building Media Lab, exploring the future of storytelling through post-cinematic media and mixed reality in art and science. He also directs the World Building Institute, which organizes narrative workshops globally, including events at the Berlin Film Festival, Sundance New Frontier, and the Future of Storytelling. For over twenty years, he has delivered keynote speeches worldwide on design for change, the impact of design practice, and the evolution of production systems across sectors. With more than 30 years as a feature film production designer, he has collaborated with directors such as David Fincher, Steven Spielberg, Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam, Zack Snyder, and Anthony Minghella. Between 2005 and 2010, as a Visiting Artist at the MIT Media Lab, he created the robot opera "Death and the Powers." His accolades include being named Royal Designer for Industry by the UK's RSA (2006), receiving the President's Award from UK Designers & Art Directors (2013), the Future Voice Award at the Interaction Awards (2014), the ADG Excellence in Production Design Award (2005), and recognition from the San Diego Film Critics Society (2002). He has also been nominated for awards from BAFTA (2006), Saturn (2010), OFTA (2003, 2006), and VES (2003), as well as receiving the 2013 D&AD President's Award.
