Biographie
Walter Doniger, a Harvard School of Business graduate, began his career as a scriptwriter in the early 1940s at Universal. During World War II, he contributed to training films for the US Army, reflecting his enduring interest in military themes, which featured prominently in much of his later television and film work. One of his final projects, "The Last Days of Saigon," written between 1980 and 1981, remains unfinished and is held under classification at the American Heritage Center at the University of Wyoming.
Starting in the late 1940s, Doniger specialized—initially as a writer and, from 1954, as a director and occasional producer—in masculine-themed stories. His work ranged from gritty prison dramas like Duffy of San Quentin (1954) and The Steel Cage (1954) to war films such as Cease Fire! (1953), film noir like Rope of Sand (1949), and contact sports movies including Safe at Home! (1962) and Mad Bull (1977). In 1957, he founded Bettina Productions Ltd. By then, he primarily worked in episodic television, directing westerns including Cheyenne (1955) and Maverick (1957), as well as crime series like Michael Shayne (1960) and Ellery Queen (1975). Doniger was known for his mastery of long takes, frequent close-ups, tracking shots, and deep-focus compositions, and he was an early proponent of videotape technology.
In the 1960s, Doniger directed 64 episodes of the popular soap opera Peyton Place (1964), experimenting with unbroken long takes. In one notable instance, he filmed an entire scene with the full cast from a fixed, crane-mounted camera that descended while the cinematographer followed a principal actor on foot, completing the continuous shot. After Peyton Place, he briefly returned to Universal before focusing again on action genres, directing several acclaimed episodes of the police drama McCloud (1970), starring Dennis Weaver.
Doniger's directing style was known to be somewhat abrasive, occasionally causing friction with producers and actors, which may have contributed to his retirement from filmmaking in 1991. He donated his personal collection of screen memorabilia to the Cinematic Arts Library at the University of Southern California.
