Biographie
Paul Bozymowski is an acclaimed director known for his work across long-form documentary films, television, short films, commercials, concerts, music videos, and live theatrical multimedia. He has documented the lives of numerous celebrities and notable figures, including Hugh Jackman, Vice President Al Gore, Sting, Carrie Underwood, Renée Fleming, Buzz Aldrin, Ed Burns, Graydon Carter, Simon Cowell, Anna Sui, Alexander Wang, Pharrell Williams, Mary J. Blige, Adam Levine, Common, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Miley Cyrus. Paul has produced media and entertainment content for a wide range of clients such as Citi, American Express, UPS, Condé Nast, Procter & Gamble, LVMH, Unilever, Sony, Intel, Toyota, IBM, and General Motors. His documentaries have been featured on networks including Fox, PBS, Discovery, A&E, and National Geographic.
Born in Detroit to Mexican and Polish parents, Paul grew up in a multicultural environment. He began piano lessons at age four and joined St. Paul's Episcopal Choir in downtown Detroit at nine. His musical background fostered a strong appreciation for the arts, leading him to travel Asia with Musical Youth International at 13. He participated in various high school theater and musical productions before studying music, theater, and film at Northwestern University. After college, Paul moved to New York City, where he developed his directing career, building on a solid foundation in editing and cinematography over nearly two decades.
Recently, Paul directed the 90-minute special American Idol: American Dream for Fox Television. This retrospective explores the profound impact of American Idol on television, music, and American culture, featuring new interviews with numerous individuals involved with the show. The special aired during the final week of the series' 15th and concluding season.
In long-form television, Paul also directed American Voices with Renée Fleming for PBS' Great Performances. This 90-minute special, filmed at the Kennedy Center, combines documentary storytelling with live performances by vocalists including Dianne Reeves, Sara Bareilles, Josh Groban, and Alison Krauss. Additionally, for PBS' Great Performances, he directed Sting: The Last Ship Live at the Public Theater, an intimate showcase of songs from the artist's latest album.
In 2013, Paul directed Miley: The Movement, a documentary following international superstar Miley Cyrus as she reinvents herself and sparks significant controversy at MTV's Video Music Awards. That same year, he directed Generation Astronaut for Unilever/Axe, a documentary chronicling an international competition to send ordinary people into space aboard an XCOR spacecraft. This film aired internationally and received a Bronze Cannes Lion and two Gold Clios.
In 2012, Paul directed the series Toyota: The Tundra Endeavour along with the companion documentary Three Nights, Three Days: Endeavour's Journey Through Los Angeles. These works document the historic journey of the Space Shuttle Endeavour as it traveled through Los Angeles streets to its permanent home at the California Science Center. The campaign, produced with Saatchi & Saatchi, won several awards, including four Gold Cannes Lions.
Throughout 2011, Paul documented the development of IBM's Watson, the cognitive computer designed to compete on the game show Jeopardy! His work included numerous short films, commercials, and television segments that captured the breakthrough story. Created with Ogilvy & Mather, the campaign generated over a billion media impressions and earned several awards, including Gold and Silver Cannes Lions.
Also in 2011, Paul directed Sting's Sixtieth Birthday Celebration: Live at the Beacon Theater. This exclusive one-night concert premiered on the Sting 25 iPad app, developed by RadicalMedia and sponsored by American Express and Chevrolet. The event featured performances by a diverse lineup of superstars such as Bruce Springsteen, Lady Gaga, Stevie Wonder, Robert Downey Jr., Will.i.am, and Mary J. Blige.
As a cinematographer, Paul has worked on numerous projects including the award-winning series Iconoclasts for the Sundance Channel, directed by Academy Award® nominees Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky; Britney: For the Record, directed by Phil Griffin; the feature documentary Brotherhood, directed by Academy Award® nominee Lilibet Foster; The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show on CBS; and Nike's Battlegrounds on MTV.
