An American-German character actor celebrated for his authentic, naturalistic style, versatility, and captivating screen presence, he is best known internationally for his iconic role as Leopold Essence—the enigmatic, dangerous, eye-patch-wearing priest—in Paolo Sorrentino's Oscar-winning series The New Pope (2020), alongside Jude Law, John Malkovich, Sharon Stone, and Cécile de France.
Recently, he has collaborated with Adam Driver, Greta Gerwig, Nick Nolte, Matt Dillon, and Emily Mortimer, and appeared in Guns Akimbo (2019) with Daniel Radcliffe and Samara Weaving.
At 49, J. David Hinze was not on movie or TV sets nor rehearsing lines with global stars. Instead, he was a Senior Management Consultant, advising CFOs, CROs, and Country Managers of Fortune Global 100 companies across Europe and the US. Yet, a profound transformation, years in the making, was imminent.
In his early 20s, while a postgraduate student in Opera Production, an acting instructor, Judy Dickerson, asked him to stay after an advanced class. She surprised him by expressing her conviction that he had the talent to succeed as a professional actor—enough to at least cover his rent and potentially much more. She urged him to promise that he would seriously pursue acting in his future. He agreed.
At 50, following deep reflection, he embraced that promise. A persistent inner voice, silent yet insistent for over 25 years, finally prevailed. Though other paths had been valuable and fulfilling, he acknowledged that acting, in all its forms, was his true calling, despite years of resistance and denial.
Starting fresh in middle age, unknown and without industry contacts, the odds were daunting. But leveraging skills, discipline, and meticulous preparation honed in business and IT, alongside a long-suppressed youthful passion, he began securing roles in short films and student projects to build a reel. This reel aimed to do what words could not—to demonstrate to casting directors, directors, and producers that he could act.
Gradually, his talent was recognized.
Since returning to acting, J. David Hinze has worked across three continents, appearing in TV and film productions in the UK, US, Germany, Italy, France, Austria, Canada, Switzerland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and South Africa.
With major projects underway, his journey affirms: if it comes truly from the heart, perhaps it’s never too late.
