Biographie
After finishing school, Gianfranco Ferré pursued architecture at the Polytechnic Institute in Milan, earning his diploma in 1969. During his student years, Ferré developed an interest in fashion, designing accessories for fellow students. His work quickly caught the attention of industry experts and was featured in the press. In the early 1970s, Ferré traveled to India for the first time, drawing inspiration for later designs.
In 1973, Ferré launched his first collection and designed accessories like bracelets and belts for notable figures such as Walter Albini and Christiane Bailly. By 1974, he was working out of his own studio, creating fashion suited for various occasions. He received the "Tiberio d'oro" award in 1975. In 1978, Ferré established his own fashion company, focusing on clothing for the modern, confident woman. By 1982, he had gained international recognition as a leading Italian fashion designer.
That same year, he introduced his first menswear collection along with matching accessories. Between 1982 and 1989, Ferré earned the "Occhio d'Oro" award multiple times. In 1984, he launched his first women's perfume. The following year, he received three honors: the Fashion Prize in Munich, the "Cutty Sark Men's Fashion Award" in New York, and the "Ambrogino d'Oro" Award in Milan. In 1986, Ferré debuted the "Gianfranco Ferré Couture Collection" in Rome and also created a men's fragrance under his name. In 1987, he introduced the "Studio 000.1 By Ferré" line for men and women.
Also in 1987, Ferré partnered with the Italian company Marzotto. Two years later, he developed a collection for plus-size fashion. In 1989, he reached a milestone by becoming the creative director at Christian Dior, where he led the Haute Couture women's line until 1996. That year, he launched the women's line "Forma 0 By GFF," designed to meet the demand for comfortable fashion for women of all ages and body types. In 1989, Ferré received several accolades, including the "De d'Or" award for his first Christian Dior Haute Couture collection in Paris and the "Milanese dell'Anno" award in Milan.
In 1990, he was awarded the "Gold Medal of Civic Merit" in Milan. His second women's perfume, "Ferré by Ferré," debuted in 1991. In 1995, Ferré created the "GFF Gianfranco Ferré" line, targeting a younger audience for both men and women. The following year, he introduced jeans under the "Gianfranco Ferré Jeans" collection. For the brand's 20th anniversary, a new fragrance named "Gianfranco Ferré 20" was released, several stores opened, and a new corporate headquarters in Milan was inaugurated.
In 2000, Ferré launched a children's fashion line under his name, along with a new men's fragrance, "Ferré Pontiaccio 21." That same year, he sold 90 percent of his company to the Italian clothing group ITTIERRE S.p.A., with sales reaching approximately 1.35 billion euros. In 2001, Ferré was honored as a guest of honor at the Shanghai International Culture Festival, where he showcased his collection. Despite battling diabetes, he remained committed to the company after the sale.
Gianfranco Ferré earned numerous prestigious awards throughout his career, including the "Crystal Apple" Award in California (1995), the "Masters of Linen" Award in Milan (1996), and the "Fur Fashion Award - Speciale 50 Anni Associazione Italiana Pellicceria" in Milan (2000). In 2004, he organized the fashion show for the Vienna Life Ball.
Gianfranco Ferré passed away on June 17, 2007, in Milan.
