Biographie
Gabrielle Blunt dedicated much of her six-decade career to theatre and television, finding them to be more fulfilling fields.
She appeared in the film Whisky Galore! (1949) and featured in a 1990s documentary about the film, which was later included on a DVD release of the original. Her television breakthrough came in 1968 with the comedy A Man of Our Times, starring George Cole. After that, she seamlessly transitioned between comedic and dramatic roles. In later years, she frequently appeared in popular comedies such as Shine on Harvey Moon (1982), One Foot in the Grave (1990), Pat and Margaret (1994), The Thin Blue Line (1995), Drop the Dead Donkey, The Fast Show, Harry Enfield's Television Programme, and Paul Merton - The Series.
Blunt started her theatre career in regional repertory in the early 1940s and toured Europe with the Entertainments National Service Association in 1945. That same year, she performed in Vanbrugh's The Confederacy at the York Festival.
Her subsequent theatre roles included Irene Coates in This Space is Mine (Hampstead Theatre, 1969); Mrs. Jeffcote in Hindle Wakes (Northampton Rep, 1972); Agatha Christie's Ten Little Niggers (Palace Theatre, Westcliffe, 1975); Under Milk Wood (Thorndike Theatre, Leatherhead, 1980); Duchess of Malfi (Oxford Playhouse, 1983); and Ayshe Raif's Fail/Safe (Soho Poly, 1986).
In 1998, Blunt toured the UK and Europe with Out of Joint's premiere of Caryl Churchill's Blue Heart, taking the production to New York the following year.
She was married twice, divorced twice, and had three children, all of whom were adopted by her second husband.
Blunt lived to the age of 95 and passed away at Denville Hall in June 2014.
