It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Richard Redlin, born in Chicago on August 9, 1952, who died in Los Angeles at the end of September 2021.
As a young man, he was incredibly active. Despite being injured at age 22 while working for his father's construction company, nothing deterred him from pursuing his dreams.
When his doctor told him he would be confined to a wheelchair for life and suggested he learn to fix TV cables, Richard firmly told him to "get out of his room." Speaking in his unmistakable Chicago tone—his bold, straightforward voice known as "the lion’s roar," a true Leo trait—he refused to accept defeat.
He created his own rehabilitation program and insisted on using the pool, even when his doctor deemed it “a waste of time.” Overcoming every obstacle, he managed to walk with braces and crutches for over 30 years. He wanted to meet people "eye to eye"—a true "Eye of the Tiger."
A brilliant student at the Art Institute of Chicago, he also studied acting at the American Academy of Art. He starred in leading TV shows and wrote, directed, and produced various projects. He excelled in scuba diving, skydiving, and skiing in the Rocky Mountains, always radiating an outstanding positive attitude that inspired those around him.
His compassion and generosity were boundless. Teaching swimming to children with special needs was, as he described, "one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life," especially when he received drawings from the children and letters of gratitude from parents sharing how their kids “opened up” to the world because of it.
Alongside his devoted wife Marielle, he fought medical battles with unwavering determination. His tenacity and courage earned him the title of a "phenomenon" by his doctors. Through the toughest times, he maintained his positive energy and sense of humor, always encouraging others to "Keep on smiling," no matter what.
Fighting like a lion, true to his name Richard Lionheart, he inspired everyone he met. His powerful presence, radiant “50,000-watt” smile, and warmth will be missed beyond words. He is survived by his wife, Marielle. Rest in peace, Richard "Lionheart"—a true spiritual warrior.
