Character actress Helen Lindsay, born Helen Jane Charley to British parents in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India, began her stage career in 1952 portraying a snake charmer in a production of Pinocchio at Manchester's Library Theatre. She made her screen debut the following year. Lindsay was known for portraying haughty royals, dignified noblewomen, and imperious or snobbish society matrons, often in period dramas adapted from literary classics. Her notable stage roles included Lady Benbow in Thark (the fourth Aldwych farce), Princess Tugo-Ukhovsky in Chatsky, and Mme de Rosemonde in Les Liaisons Dangereuses with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1993.
Primarily active on television, Lindsay was recognized for her role as the proud Estella, Magwitch's daughter, in a 1959 BBC adaptation of Great Expectations, the kind-hearted teacher Miss Temple in Jane Eyre (1970), and Lady Constantia Lorridaile in Little Lord Fauntleroy (1995). She appeared in numerous TV series including The Avengers (1961), Upstairs, Downstairs (1971), All Creatures Great & Small (1978), and Foyle's War (2002). Her extensive portrayals of historical figures included Eleanor de Montfort, Countess of Leicester and Pembroke, in Churchill's People (1974), Queen Yolande of Aragon in The Disputation (1986), and the Dowager Queen Maria de Medici in an episode of The Wonderful World of Disney (1997).
Helen Lindsay retired from acting in 2009. She was married to Alan Pickford, an art director and production designer known for The Jewel in the Crown (1984), who passed away in 2002.
