Biografi

Stjepan "Stipe" Mesić (pronounced [stjêpan stǐːpe měːsit͡ɕ]; born December 24, 1934) is a Croatian lawyer and politician who served as Croatia's president from 2000 to 2010. Prior to his two five-year presidential terms, he was Prime Minister of SR Croatia in 1990 following the first multi-party elections, the final President of the Presidency of Yugoslavia in 1991, and subsequently Secretary General of the Non-Aligned Movement that same year. He also held positions as Speaker of the Croatian Parliament from 1992 to 1994 and mayor of his hometown Orahovica.

Mesić was a member of the Croatian Parliament during the 1960s but withdrew from politics until 1990, when he joined the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ). After HDZ's electoral victory, he was appointed President of the Executive Council (Prime Minister) of the Socialist Republic of Croatia, then still part of the SFR Yugoslavia. Although his cabinet preceded Croatia's independence, the Croatian government regards it as the first cabinet of the current Croatian republic. Mesić resigned from this post to become a member of the Yugoslav federal presidency representing the Socialist Republic of Croatia, serving first as vice president and then as the last President of Yugoslavia in 1991 before its dissolution.

Following Yugoslavia's breakup and Croatia's independence, Mesić was Speaker of the Croatian Parliament from 1992 to 1994, when he left HDZ. Alongside other parliamentarians, he helped establish the Croatian Independent Democrats (HND). In 1997, most HND members, including Mesić, merged into the Croatian People's Party (HNS).

After the death of Franjo Tuđman in December 1999, Mesić won the presidential election in February 2000. He was the last Croatian president to hold office under a strong semi-presidential system, where the president was the most powerful government figure, with authority to appoint and dismiss the Prime Minister and cabinet. This system was later replaced by a parliamentary system that maintained direct presidential elections but significantly reduced presidential powers while strengthening the Prime Minister's role. Mesić was reelected in January 2005 for a second five-year term. Throughout his presidency, he consistently ranked as Croatia's most popular politician.
