Like his mentor Lindsay Anderson, multi-award-winning filmmaker Saxon Logan is a 'vocational' artist, choosing to work only on projects that deeply engage him personally. Anderson hired Logan as a trainee at the Royal Court's Theatre Upstairs. After a year at The Royal Court Theatre, culminating in directing Dr Galley at the Traverse Theatre, Logan became Lindsay Anderson's personal assistant on the director's satire O LUCKY MAN! He then joined BBC TV, where he completed two award-winning short films: STEPPING OUT and WORKING SURFACE, featuring his close friend, Scottish filmmaker Bill Douglas. Subsequently, he worked as a producer on BBC Arts' Omnibus series, creating acclaimed documentaries on DIRK BOGARDE and sculptor RAYMOND MASON before leaving to become an independent documentary producer/director.
His award-winning documentaries for Channel 4 and ITV, including BLACK RHINO - THE LAST STAND and PLACE OF SKULLS, raised global awareness of endangered African species. While continuing television work, Saxon directed and co-wrote SLEEPWALKER, a unique blend of political satire and horror that received acclaim at the Berlin Film Festival and has since become a celebrated classic. In recognition of his influential documentary work, he was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the Royal Geographical Society.
Lindsay Anderson once wrote of Saxon’s filmmaking: "His talent as a filmmaker is prodigious; he deserves and can effortlessly fill a large canvas... The fact he chooses to exercise this gift selectively makes his work all the more valuable." Currently, Logan is engaged in several film projects, notably one on Mozambican journalist CARLOS CARDOSO and another titled AT THE GATES OF THUNDER, based on Victorian explorer Dr. Livingstone's ill-fated Zambezi expedition. With support from the DCMS/UK Film Council, he recently completed a screenplay called FREEDOM, an epic story of conflict, tyranny, hope, and dreams, and is developing a feature film, THE OUTNUMBERED, about the Rhodesian Bush War. Now based in South Africa, he continues developing AT THE GATES OF THUNDER.
In September 2013, the British Film Institute released Saxon Logan’s Sleepwalker, Stepping Out, and Working Surface on DVD and Blu-Ray to widespread critical acclaim and commercial success.
