Chuck Brown is widely recognized as the pioneer and driving force behind Go-Go music, a genre that blends Funk, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Blues, Soul, R&B, and Dancehall. Although primarily associated with Washington, D.C., the Nation's Capital, Go-Go music has gained national prominence, largely due to Chuck Brown and his band, The Soul Searchers. The genre originated in the late 1960s and rose to popularity during the 1970s.
An accomplished guitarist, Chuck Brown was known for playing a blonde Gibson ES-335. Early in his career, he performed with soul singer Jerry Butler. Dubbed the Godfather of Go-Go, Brown built a dedicated fan base in the D.C. area and collaborated with a diverse range of artists, including Jill Scott, Ledisi, Marcus Miller, and numerous Go-Go bands.
Washingtonian Magazine recently named Chuck Brown one of the 45 most influential figures shaping D.C. over the past 45 years. Celebrated as a local legend, he was honored in 2009 when a section of 7th Street NW, between Florida Avenue and T Street, was renamed "Chuck Brown Way."
On September 4, 2011, the National Symphony Orchestra paid tribute to Washington music legends, including Chuck Brown, Duke Ellington, and John Philip Sousa, with a free Labor Day concert on the Capitol's West Lawn. Brown and The Soul Searchers closed the event with a memorable performance.
Some of Chuck Brown's early hits include "We the People," "I Need Some Money," and "Bustin' Loose." The latter has become the Washington Nationals baseball team's home run celebration song and has been featured in a national Chips Ahoy Cookies television advertisement.
