Maurice Escande's name is deeply connected to the Comédie-Française, France's oldest and most prestigious theatre company. He was a member of the troupe—with only a few breaks—from 1918 to 1970, advancing from "pensionnaire" (paid actor) to "sociétaire" (full member) and eventually serving as chief administrator from 1960 to 1970. Born on November 4, 1892, he was still a teenager when he chose to pursue acting. A play he saw at the Odéon ignited his passion for the craft. He studied drama under Denis d'Inès and Raphaël Duflos, winning awards in both comedy and tragedy. This marked the start of a long and distinguished stage career, where he performed works by Racine, Corneille, Victor Hugo, Musset, Balzac, Molière, Verlaine, Voltaire, Shakespeare, Beaumarchais, Vigny, Guitry, Rostand, Montherlant, and many others.
Beyond acting, directing plays, and teaching drama to numerous future stars including Claude Piéplu and Michel Bouquet, Maurice Escande was also a film actor from 1917 to 1970. However, while prolific with around 70 films, his cinematic career was less distinguished. Few leading figures of French cinema cast him, and when they did, it was often in lesser works, such as Marcel Pagnol's Le gendre de Monsieur Poirier (1933) or Jean Grémillon's L'étrange Madame X (1951). His filmography also includes many mediocre titles by less reputable directors like Wulschleger, Caron, Vallée, Hugon, Tavano, Couzinet, and Jayet—largely filler fare.
Nonetheless, Escande brought grace and natural elegance to several notable films. He starred as the Duke of Gandie in Abel Gance's then-provocative historical drama Lucrezia Borgia (1935), played the village squire in Jean Renoir's La Marseillaise (1937), the Marquis des Bruyères in Gance's Le Capitaine Fracasse (1943), Metternich in Sacha Guitry's The Lame Devil (1948), and appeared in Man to Men (1948). He also featured in quality productions by Henri Diamant-Berger (Three Musketeers, 1932), Georges Lacombe (Les époux scandaleux, 1935; Café de Paris, 1938), Robert Vernay (Le père Goriot, 1944; Le Capitan, 1946), Albert Valentin (La vie de plaisir, 1944), among others.
Maurice Escande's commanding presence and noble demeanor consistently enhanced the films he appeared in, regardless of their overall merit. Often cast as aristocrats—counts, dukes, marquises, princes, or even kings such as Louis XIV and Louis XV—he was one of the great French theatre talents who brought their artistry to cinema, elevating good films and making weaker ones more bearable.
