Don Ferguson gained recognition in the music world as a founding member of Was (Not Was), which he created alongside childhood friend David Weiss in suburban Detroit, performing under the stage names Don Was and David Was. During the 1980s and early 1990s, Was (Not Was) released four studio albums that featured a distinctive mix of soul, funk, R&B, rock, and dance music, paired with satirical and unconventional lyrics. Their 1988 album, What Up, Dog?, produced the hit singles "Spy in the House of Love" and "Walk the Dinosaur" in both the US and UK. Since the late 1980s, Was has been a sought-after, critically acclaimed, and commercially successful producer, earning multiple Grammy Awards and an Emmy Award for his work. His collaborations include legendary artists such as the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, John Mayer, Bonnie Raitt, Gregg Allman, Brian Wilson, Ziggy Marley, and many more. Albums produced by Was have garnered numerous multi-platinum, platinum, and gold certifications, with sales exceeding 90 million copies worldwide. As president of Blue Note Records, the renowned jazz label that recently marked its 75th anniversary, Was leads the company and serves as an ambassador for its music, promoting the label’s artists globally. He also oversees Blue Note’s unique and historic music catalog, enhancing the label’s legacy through ongoing and extensive reissue projects that reach audiences across both analog and digital platforms.
