Biografi
Robin Murphy was exposed to filmmaking from a young age, as her father Geoff Murphy began making films when she was five. Since 1979, she has been involved in New Zealand’s film industry, contributing to various roles including location manager, assistant director, producer, production manager, as well as positions in costume, art, sound, and additional crew departments.
Her extensive feature film portfolio includes early classics like Goodbye Pork Pie (1980) and Once Were Warriors (1994), as well as later projects such as King Kong (2005), The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the 2017 remake of Goodbye Pork Pie, titled Pork Pie, which she worked on alongside her brother Matt Murphy. Her television credits feature shows like Outrageous Fortune (2005), Step Dave (2014), Power Rangers Dino Charge (2015), the Sweet Tooth pilot Out of the Deep Woods (2021), and the Peacock series One of Us Is Lying (2021).
From the late 1990s onward, Robin balanced freelance work with producing short films and developing feature film scripts. She has produced eight short films, including Run (2007), which won a special jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival that year.
In 2016, she launched the first of two seasons of the popular web series Pot Luck, collaborating with writer/director Ness Simons. That same year, her short film Sparrow, created with writer/director Welby Ings, was officially selected for over 70 film festivals and earned 16 awards. In 2017, she and Ness Simons founded the production company Fired Up Productions, dedicated to bringing diverse stories to mainstream audiences. Between 2019 and 2020, Fired Up Productions post-produced and self-distributed Beatrice Joblin’s indie feature Births, Deaths and Marriages (2019), which screened at NZIFF 2019 and had a theatrical run in New Zealand before and after the initial Covid-19 lockdown.
Robin transitioned into feature film producing in early 2019, collaborating with her brother Paul Murphy on Lowdown Dirty Criminals (2020). In 2020, alongside co-producer Catherine Fitzgerald, she managed to bring Welby Ings’ debut feature Punch (2022) into production, navigating the challenges posed by lockdowns and Covid-19 restrictions. Punch premiered at the New Zealand International Film Festival in July 2022 and was released in cinemas in September 2022.
