Jerry Heller is best known for managing the West Coast rap supergroup and gangsta rap pioneers N.W.A and Eazy-E, as well as for co-founding and serving as CEO of Ruthless Records.
Heller is one of the few music industry figures who has significantly influenced musical trends and movements for five decades. With an exceptional talent for anticipating industry shifts, he rose to prominence in the 1960s and 70s as a leading super agent, a distinction shared with only a few like Freddie Fields and David Geffen. During this pivotal era, he was instrumental in bringing Elton John and Pink Floyd to their first U.S. tours. His impressive roster also included foundational artists such as Journey, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Boz Scaggs, Grassroots, The Guess Who, Marvin Gaye, Joan Armatrading, Van Morrison, War, Average White Band, and Crosby & Nash. Building on this success, Heller continued to engineer groundbreaking record deals in New Wave and Punk, reshaping the music industry throughout the following decade.
In the mid-1980s, Heller became the driving force and marketing mastermind behind rap music's rise and crossover appeal to mainstream audiences. He co-founded Ruthless Records with the late Eazy-E and discovered and managed influential artists including N.W.A, Egyptian Lover, World Class Wreckin’ Cru, L.A. Dream Team, J.J. Fad, The D.O.C., Michel'le, Above the Law, and others, who laid the groundwork for the achievements of Priority Records and Interscope Records. Ruthless Records has sold over 110 million albums, excluding singles. Artists like Bone Thugs-N-Harmony—discovered as homeless youths in Cleveland by Eazy-E and Heller—and producers such as Dr. Dre, whose careers Heller shaped, have sold millions of records through Interscope, Priority, ATCO/Atlantic, MCA, and Relativity/Sony Records. At the time of Eazy-E's death and Heller’s exit from Ruthless, the label was generating $10 million in monthly revenue.
Jerry Heller is arguably the most financially successful record executive of the Rap Era. He launched Ruthless Records with $250,000 of his own money, alongside a $2.25 million investment from Sony/Relativity during the P&D deal. To date, the original members of N.W.A have collectively grossed approximately $1.75 billion.
