Director of Photography Bio
Checco Varese, ASC recently completed work on It: Chapter Two, directed by Andy Muschietti, the sequel to last year’s box office success. He also served as cinematographer for the first season of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, Amazon’s fresh adaptation of the iconic CIA agent, starring John Krasinski in the lead role.
His previous projects include shooting the pilot for Fox’s upcoming legal drama Proven Innocent and Jeffrey Nachmanoff’s sci-fi thriller Replicas, featuring Keanu Reeves and Thomas Middleditch, released January 11, 2019. Varese frequently collaborates with director Patricia Riggen, having shot Miracles From Heaven and The 33, which tells the remarkable true story of 33 miners trapped in a Chilean mine. Other feature credits include Riggen’s Girl in Progress and second unit work on Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim.
With an extensive portfolio, Varese has earned a reputation as the go-to cinematographer for pilots. He has shot nearly two dozen season openers, many of which have been picked up for full series, including FX’s The Strain; A&E’s The Returned; ABC Family’s The Fosters; The CW’s Melrose Place; and CBS’s The Defenders. Notably, he shot the pilot for True Blood, which ran for seven seasons.
In the mid-1990s, Varese established himself as a prominent director of photography in the music video industry, filming hundreds of videos such as Dave Matthews Band’s "Crash" and Prince’s "Black Sweat," the latter earning him a nomination for Best Cinematography at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards.
Born in Peru, Varese began his career in the mid-1980s, spending nearly ten years capturing news and documentaries in major conflict zones: Latin America (Chiapas Uprising, Salvador and Nicaragua Wars, Panama Invasion, Colombia Drug War, Shining Path, Chile’s Military Junta); the Caribbean (Haiti Crisis); Europe (Bosnia and Chechnya Crises); the Middle East (Gulf War, West Bank and Gaza Strip Crisis); and Africa (South African Riots and the Rwanda Crisis).
Fluent in six languages, Varese resides in Los Angeles and is represented by DDA.
