Donna Langley, Chairman of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group (UFEG), leads the global creative strategy and business operations for the motion picture division. She oversees production, marketing, and distribution of film and television content across Universal Pictures, DreamWorks Animation (DWA), Focus Features, Universal Pictures International, and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.
Under Langley’s leadership, Universal has consistently dominated the theatrical market, revitalizing and expanding key franchises such as Fast & Furious, DWA’s How to Train Your Dragon, Jurassic World, the Bourne series, Pitch Perfect, Illumination’s Despicable Me, Fifty Shades, Mamma Mia, Ride Along, and The Purge. By cultivating franchise development and securing long-term filmmaker partnerships with Amblin Entertainment, Blumhouse Productions, Illumination, and Monkeypaw Productions, she has positioned Universal as a vital content provider to the wider NBCUniversal portfolio, including Universal Brand Development, Peacock, and Theme Parks. Langley has also established the studio as a creative hub for emerging filmmakers and content creators focused on original and inclusive storytelling.
Before becoming sole Chairman of UFEG in 2019, Langley was Chairman of Universal Pictures starting in 2013, where she crafted a strategic mix of broad-appeal tentpoles, breakthrough comedies, and culturally resonant horror films, leading to four consecutive years of record global profits and the studio’s two most profitable years in its 107-year history. During her tenure, she realigned Focus Features globally with Universal Pictures International, successfully integrated DreamWorks Animation into the studio, and launched the Global Talent Development & Inclusion group, making Universal the first major feature studio to establish a department dedicated to fostering diversity and inclusion across production and workforce.
The studio has earned numerous accolades under Langley’s guidance. Most notably, Sam Mendes’ acclaimed film 1917 won Golden Globe Awards for Best Picture and Best Director. In 2019, Universal Pictures and Focus Features garnered five Academy Awards®, including Best Picture for Green Book and Best Adapted Screenplay for BlacKkKlansman. In 2018, Get Out won the Academy Award® for Best Original Screenplay.
Other commercial and critical successes overseen by Langley include Hobbs & Shaw, Us, Downton Abbey, Harriet, Queen & Slim, Good Boys, Yesterday, Glass, Night School, Halloween, Illumination’s Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch, The Secret Life of Pets 1 & 2, Girls Trip, Split, Straight Outta Compton, Atomic Blonde, Ride Along, Bridesmaids, Neighbors, Unbroken, Trainwreck, Les Misérables, The Theory of Everything, The Danish Girl, and Ray, among many others. Langley joined Universal in 2001 as Senior Vice President of Production and later served as President of Production and Co-Chairman of Universal Pictures. She began her career at New Line Cinema, contributing to the Austin Powers franchise as well as The Cell and Drop Dead Gorgeous.
Langley has been widely recognized for her influence in film and entertainment. A native of the United Kingdom, she is the first British woman to lead a major Hollywood studio and was honored with the title Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (DBE) by the Queen in the 2020 New Year’s Honours List. This award acknowledges her significant contributions to redefining popular culture and her dedication to expanding opportunities for women and people of color in the industry, while supporting organizations that provide access, networks, and pathways for success to all. Additional honors include the 2018 Producers Guild of America’s Milestone Award, the 2016 Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation Pioneer of the Year Award, and the 2014 Women in Film’s Crystal Award for Excellence in Film.
A devoted advocate for mentorship and female empowerment, Langley serves as an Ambassador for the Vital Voices Global Ambassadors Program and has been on its Board of Directors since 2013. She also played a key role in founding The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Film Mentorship program.
Langley is a voting member of both the British Academy of Film and Television Arts and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She serves on the Board of Trustees for the American Film Institute, the Motion Picture Association (MPA), USC’s School of Cinematic Arts Board of Councilors, and the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s Entertainment Industry Council.
