Lindsay Greenbush was born Rachel Lindsay Bush on May 25, 1970, in Hollywood, California. She is the older twin sister of Sidney Robyn Bush, who was born three minutes later. Their father, Billy Bush, an actor credited as Billy Green Bush, appeared in films like "Five Easy Pieces" (1970), "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" (1974), and "Tom Horn" (1980). The twins also have a brother named Clay, who made occasional appearances on "Little House on the Prairie." Their mother was Carole Kay Bush.
Lindsay and Sidney’s first major role was sharing the part of Jill Hayden in the 1973 TV movie "Sunshine," starring Cliff DeYoung. After filming, director Joseph Sargent recommended them for the role of Carrie Ingalls, the youngest daughter on Michael Landon’s series "Little House on the Prairie," based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books. Landon met the twins and immediately cast them.
The pilot of "Little House" aired on NBC on March 30, 1974, and was a success. Within six months, it became a weekly series, premiering on September 11, 1974. The twins were credited as Lindsay Sidney Greenbush. The first season ended with the show ranked 13th in the ratings. Although the show slipped out of the top 30 during its second season, NBC moved it from Wednesday to Monday to boost ratings. By the end of the third season, it was ranked 16th.
Carrie’s role was limited, and fans wanted to see more of her. Their wish was granted on December 18, 1978, in the episode "The Godsister," where the twins appeared together. In the story, Carrie, feeling lonely after her father leaves for work, creates an imaginary friend named Alyssa to cope. The twins alternated playing the two characters. From seasons 4 through 7, the series maintained a spot within the top 20.
During the show’s popularity, the twins, along with co-stars Melissa Gilbert and Melissa Sue Anderson, gained a nationwide fan base.
For the ninth season, Michael Landon retooled the show as "Little House: A New Beginning," moving the Ingalls family (except Laura) to Burr Oak, Iowa, to start a new life. This change explained the twins’ absence from the series.
After leaving "Little House" in 1982, Lindsay guest-starred in "Matt Houston" in 1983, playing an abuse victim. She also auditioned for the role of Dorothy Gale in "Return to Oz," but was passed over for being considered too old. Sidney appeared as Amy McVickers on "Hillie and Hambone" in 1984 alongside Alan Hale.
Beyond "Little House," the twins appeared in magazines, commercials, and more. In 1978, they wrote to Amy Carter, daughter of then-President Jimmy Carter. Amy responded, inviting them to visit the White House. She told them that "Little House" was her favorite show, and the twins presented her with a portrait of the cast.
Both sisters continued their education, graduating from Santa Monica High School in 1988. Rachel Lindsay studied theater arts there and at Moorpark College, later earning a BS in Accountancy from California State Lutheran University.
Rachel Lindsay remains active in appearances and, in 2016, performed in "The Vagina Monologues" alongside fellow cast member Alison Arngrim.
Lindsay has one daughter.
