Biografia
Gabriel Carrubba is a filmmaker, writer, director, and producer from Melbourne, Australia, known for his emotionally honest and character-focused storytelling.
Raised in Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs, Carrubba discovered a love for the arts early on through creative writing. At fifteen, after watching Stand By Me in a high school English class, he realized storytelling would play a central role in his life. By seventeen, he left school to pursue acting before enrolling in Film and Television Production at JMC Academy, where he began establishing himself as a versatile storyteller across writing, directing, and producing.
Carrubba gained notable recognition with his debut feature film, Sunflower, a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age drama addressing identity, masculinity, and self-acceptance in suburban Melbourne. The film debuted at the Sydney Film Festival and was showcased at major Australian festivals, including the Melbourne International Film Festival and Adelaide Film Festival. It was also featured in Queer Screen's Goes to Cannes showcase at the Marché du Film, receiving praise for its genuine and empathetic depiction of queer youth.
Following Sunflower’s success, Carrubba produced Zane Borg’s second feature, River, a coming-of-age drama selected for the Adelaide Film Festival’s Goes to Cannes program and which premiered internationally at the 66th Zlín Film Festival.
Together with Borg at Pancake Originals, Carrubba continues to create and produce bold Australian narratives that delve into themes of identity, belonging, and human connection, while supporting emerging voices in the screen industry.
