Marc Handler is an American producer, writer, voice director, and story editor best known for his work on Cowboy Bebop, Nezha and the Transformers, Astro Boy, FLCL, Stitch & Ai, Naruto, and Voltron. He is a pioneer in bringing anime to Western audiences, and has worked as a creative executive for Sony, Japan; China Central Television (CCTV); and as an executive producer for Disney, China. He is also the author of Collaborative Screenwriting, published by Routledge Press in the U.K.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Handler earned two masters degrees from the University of Southern California in directing theatre and writing for film and television. He is currently a visiting professor at Beijing Film Academy, China’s top film school.
Handler wrote original episodes for American animation series such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Denver the Last Dinosaur, and was a leader in the first major wave of imported anime, writing English language adaptations for Voltron and Transformers, then later for Cowboy Bebop, Fooly Cooly, Ghost in the Shell, and Metropolis. He also worked on Chinese, Korean, and European projects for companies such as UYoung, BRB, and Sunwoo; voice directed Stephen Chow for the English dub of Shaolin Soccer; and created animation series and live action TV dramas for Disney, China.
Marc's works have won awards from the Tokyo Animation Fair in Japan; the Shanghai TV Festival, SMG International cooperation awards, and CCG forum in China; the Premios Midia Awards in South America; and the American Anime Awards, L.A. Dramalogue awards, and San Francisco Playwrights awards in the U.S.
He was a featured speaker at the International Conference on Asian Civilization in Beijing, and a presenter at professional forums in Shanghai and Hangzhou, China; has been a judge for the Canadian BANFF awards; a guest lecturer at Tokyo University and Singapore Polytechnic; a featured speaker at San Diego Comic-Con, and Anime L.A; and an organizer and workshop leader at Disney-SART training events in Burbank and NYC.
Marc’s instructional book Collaborative Screenwriting: A Global Guide is available in English and is currently being translated for publication in Chinese and Arabic. His other instructional books "Perfect Writing" and "Perfect Presentations" were published by Freelec Publishers in Korea and Beijing University Press in China.
