Saycon Sengbloh was born in Atlanta, GA, to an American mother and a Liberian father. She has been a prominent actress and vocalist in the latest wave of contemporary Broadway and off-Broadway productions, showcasing a fusion of pop, rock, and soul music. Her credits include Rent, Oprah Winfrey's The Color Purple, Disney's Aida, the revival of Hair, Wicked, Hurt Village, and the groundbreaking Afrobeat musical Fela!, where she starred as the captivating Sandra Iszadore. VIBE magazine featured her as one of the hottest up-and-coming talents in their annual Juice issue. The musical Fela! won multiple Tony Awards. Saycon contributed vocals to the Grammy-nominated soundtracks of Fela!, Hair, and Motown the Musical, and provided backing vocals for the Julie Taymor film Across the Universe. Known for her versatility, she brought hip-hop to Broadway through Tupac Shakur’s production Holler If Ya Hear Me, serving as a muse and rapper for a new generation of theater enthusiasts. She began performing as a child in plays and musicals at Tri-Cities School for Visual and Performing Arts, attended Agnes Scott College, and has appeared in commercials, print ads, and on the cover of the New York Times bestseller Big Girls Don't Cry by Connie Brisco. After numerous productions with the Freddie Hendrick’s Youth Ensemble of Atlanta, she has collaborated with directors such as Kenny Leon, Michael Greif, Charles Randolph-Wright, and Tyler Perry. She takes pride in having worked with female directors Julie Dash and Julie Taymor. Saycon Sengbloh holds a devoted following among New York theater fans as the first woman of African descent to portray Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, in the hit musical Wicked. As an indie music artist and songwriter, she has released several songs and music videos, including "Be Here," "Warrior," and "Possible.
