Ian Gillan, formerly the lead singer of the Javelins and Episode Six, joined Deep Purple in 1969. During his time with the band, they produced iconic albums such as "Deep Purple In Rock," "Fireball," "Machine Head," and "Who Do We Think We Are," alongside several live recordings.
In 1973, Gillan departed from Deep Purple due to creative differences with guitarist Ritchie Blackmore and the strain of intensive touring. Around late 1975 or early 1976, he formed The Ian Gillan Band, releasing two studio albums: "Child in Time" (1976), featuring a jazzy rendition of the Purple classic, and "Clear Air Turbulence" (1977), plus a live album recorded at the Budokan.
After dissolving The Ian Gillan Band, he established the group Gillan, which produced five albums: "Mr. Universe" (1979), "Future Shock" (1980), "Glory Road" (1980), "Double Trouble" (1981), and "Magic" (1982). The band disbanded due to Ian's throat issues. In 1983, he joined Black Sabbath, collaborating with Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler to release "Born Again" and tour in 1984. Soon after, Ritchie Blackmore invited Ian to reform Deep Purple MKII with Jon Lord, Roger Glover, and Ian Paice. Gillan left Sabbath to rejoin Deep Purple, recording "Perfect Strangers" (1984) and "The House of Blue Light" (1987). However, ongoing conflicts with Blackmore led to his second departure from the band.
In 1988, Ian and Roger Glover released the album "Accidentally on Purpose" under the name Gillan/Glover. Ian engaged in various projects until 1992, when he formed a new band and recorded "Cherkazoo and Other Stories."
Gillan rejoined Deep Purple in 1993, contributing to "The Battle Rages On." Following a world tour, Blackmore left permanently. The band briefly toured with Joe Satriani before recruiting Steve Morse as a permanent guitarist. This lineup produced "Purpendicular" (1996) and "Abandon" (1998). In 1998, Ian released his solo album "Dreamcatcher."
For the 2003 album "Bananas," keyboardist Jon Lord was replaced by former Rainbow member Don Airey. Deep Purple MK VIII toured extensively in support of "Bananas" and went on to record their 18th studio album, "Rapture of the Deep," released in November 2005.
Ian released "Gillan's Inn" in 2006 and continues to tour with Deep Purple.
